Frozen dinners. Canned ravioli. Powdered soup.
The worst offender?
Ramen.
We worry that our children, raised in an instant culture, will not only be forced to but even prefer ready made food. Jobs of the current market hardly allow a parent enough time to prepare a home cooked, made from scratch meal.
I was a latch-key kid. My parents would say:
'Remember to lock the door, and never answer it or pick up the phone'.
The parents I work for are not those type of parents.
I pick up their kids, make sure homework gets done, and then get a hot meal ready for the rascals.
My official job title is 'Nanny'.
And to be completely honest, I use the frozen stuff too.
I pick up 'my kids' from their afterschool program at 5 PM, and by the time we're at the house they're already hungry.
No hiding it. I've made all the easy go-tos: frozen potstickers, pre-made burger patties, a jar of pasta sauce. We all know kids are picky eaters. They like what they already know they like. It's a battle to get them not to immediately reject something new and sometimes I don't feel like fighting them so I just give in.
But fear not! Sometimes I make the glorious, recipe required, grandma inspired meals that you'd always hoped your kids would eat:
Chicken pot pie, made from scratch barbeque sauce, empanadas, even apple pie.
I'm not much of a cook yet, but I enjoy cooking, so I've decided to record my trials and tribulations on this blog.
My hope is that you the reader will see some similar situation in your life and be able to relate, and maybe you could post some kid friendly, healthy recipes too. That would be helpful.
